Submissions are now being accepted for an upcoming book called "V!VA List World: 333 Most Loved Travel Experiences" due to be published in April 2008. Viva Travel Guides are looking for 500-700 word articles and / or photographs about the most amazing travel experiences. Been to a place or had an experience so exhilarating that- if given the opportunity again- you'd conceivably plan your entire trip around it? Know of an exotic nook on the planet that we don't, or traveled a known hotspot like the Taj Mahal in a way no one else has? Can you tell your story in such a way that it takes other travelers there without ever leaving their chairs? If so, your piece may be V!VA List worthy! Please note that payment is in the form of a proportion of royalties after the event, but this is a great opportunity for talented upcoming writers to get their stories published. To find out more information, or to pitch a story idea, please contact: paula@vivatravelguides.com

I don't know of anything else, and I find those you listed expensive.
Maybe I'm just cheap, I don't know.
I've tried to hard copy of the Writer's Market, and like it.
For a while I went through a phase of finding a lot of magazines I liked in newsstands - magazines that weren't listed anywhere... but nothing I ever proposed for them ever worked out, or else they didn't pay anything worth mentioning... maybe Î'm wrong, but I was left with the impression that listed publications were a little more... stable and... honorable.

There is also a website somewhere for people who want to share passwords to pay databases. That might be the way to go.

Maybe this question has been asked by every new travel writer, but is there a source (preferably online) that lists travel writing contacts and submission requirements for U.S. newspapers?

I've read of two:

"Editor and Publisher Yearbook" at

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/yearbook/index.jsp

This is a searchable database, but access to it costs $695 per year. Seeing as how I only need to do a single, one-time search, this seems pretty steep.

There's also "Travel Publications Update" at

http://main.travelwriters.com/tpu/about/index.asp

Which is only $39 but has 200 newspapers. I don't know if that's U.S. or worldwide.

I don't think the online version of Writer's Market has this kind of newspaper info.

Anyone tried any of these and what has your experience been?

Thanks,

Are you driving alone? Stopping to rest by the side of the road is not a great idea. Especially since the plates on your car will read North American. You are creating a potentially dangerous situation. Bandits roam freely and are quite litterally part of local governments.
Border crossings will result in searching you and your car, and reviewing citizenship.
I would make sure you have contact with someone at home a couple times of week.
Advising your whereabouts. Central American countries are infamous for people gone missing. Especially if you apear clueless and not to belong. Don't talk to strangers should be taken seriously. If this is an adventure you've had your heart set on.... Plan with great detail. Make accomodations prior to leaving the U.S. into Mexico. Give a call number to hotel if you do not arrive on time. Ask hotel attendents for guidance in site seeing.
Not trying to freak you out...... Just true. Intense spanish lesson prior to leaving would be a good idea.
Sounds like a great adventure, but needs to be done with appropriate planning.
Let me know if I can help.
Blessings & Light
Tami
P.S. I was a travel agent for 12 years prior to 9/11. also have central american friends.....

I am in the process of planning a trip from Montreal, Canada to Bocquete, Panama. Originaly I wanted to to it on motorcycle, but now think I'll do it by car.

This will require crossing thru (USA of course), Mexico/Belize, Guatemala, El Savador or Hondras, Nicarugua, and Costa Rica. And, my Spanish is extremely limited ...

Has anyone driven much of ANY of these countries ... and what advise can you give me regarding border crossings, highway police, stoppinf roadside to rest, etc..

Peace,

:D

Hi Lola D. .... Yes, Siena ... Thank you!

My family is from a town called Antey-St-Andre in the Vallee d'Aosta. I stayed there for a month in the house that my grandfather was born in. The house is still in our family, but no one lives there full-time. I'm sure it will be rented out during the Olmpics!

Have you ever been to Palio?

Ciao for now,

Benvenuto Indigo Bucks :)

Out of curiosity: where did you spend your month in the Alps?

Also, beware before you submit your stuff about the palio: the city's correct spelling is Siena. It's not only the anal-retentive in me that's talking ;) Siena is a very famous place, and an editor is going to appreciate VERY MUCH any effort of being precise when spelling foreign names: it means less job for 'em!

Good luck with your nomadic life planning.

Hello to all !!

I am as new to this TRIBE as one can possibly be! I've just joined tribe.net and quickly found my way to this tribe where I've read with interest the previous postings.

I am from Montreal, Canada and - at age 39 - have recently 'retired' from the 'corporate' world as a technology consultant. I have done some traveling recently and have enjoyed it to the point that I would like to pursue a more nomadic lifestyle. One option I have begun exploring, as a means of income while 'nomading', is freelance writing - including travel writing.

Two summers ago I spent three months in Italy, including one month in a remote Alpine village (birthplace of my grandparents) where I wrote email journals almost daily as a means of keeping in touch with friends and family - many of whom suggested I look into writing as a career.

I have found a couple of resources that I would like to submit some of my writing to and if anyone in this tribe has any suggestions or resources that would also be relavant, I would be very appreciative.

Incidently, I also wrote about 'Palio', an amazing 'horse race' / five-day festival which takes place twice every year in Sienna (Tuscany) . If you're ever in Italy at the begining of July or the end of August, I strongly suggest you attend!

Ciao for now,

i would hate to pimp what i have done, but whatta hell...

did a 13-month expedition and came back this May. in summary:

- set up a blog
- carried two digi-cams and a PowerBook
- wrote a blog entry once in 5 days on the average
- published a 40-60 page (average) electronic magazine once in two months

that's a lot of writing and shooting photos, as well as editing, page-layout'ing, publishing, and try to promote, all on the road.

we tried to solicit support/donations by giving the 6 issues of the electronic magazine subscription. some family members and friends generously signed up, but not much outside the circuit. we are still trying to get the word out after we came back, looking for publishers and further opportunities to write.

it's all doable. the support from families and friends did cover some costs, a small fraction of it, and the rest is all self-funded. i would love to do it again.

if you are interested in the blog, please check:

the last entry is from Bali, and i have not update it since mid-May.

you can do it, too.
