advances queries

Hi, got a question for anybody, but specifically for Michelle...
I just got news a publisher called Avalon is looking for someone to write a book for expats in european countries.
They're taking proposals - detailed proposals. Like, really detailed.
Is it cool to ask how much the advance is before sending a proposal?
Michelle, any idea how much the going advance rate is for a 350-400 page book? {I'm guessing they pay a lot less than Fodor's...)

Honestly, having done the guidebook thing twice, I don't know if I'd do it again -- at least not without more control over the final edit. I'm working on one now, but most likely will self-publish or find a small regional press to put it out.

A 300-400 page book, depending on the publisher, will probably get an initial offer of between $7,000 and $10,000 -- mostly based on the excuse that you're new to the company, etc. It may sound like a lot, but a guidebook is more nuts & bolts than a standard article. Lots of basic facts to research [hours, prices, addresses, phone numbers, etc] before you can even think of writing the review. So your basic hourly rate will fall somewhere in the $8-10 range, if you do the book to the best of your ability.

Also, I've heard lately that Avalon is starting to get a sour rep amongst its authors. I'd read this post and its responses before sending off a proposal: travelwriters.blogspot.com/2005...ments

That said, the info you get from doing a guidebook, and the contacts you make, could result in future articles. And it is really cool to see your book on Amazon and in stores. LOL

Hope that helps in your decision. =)
