Looking for Unique Travel Stories

Submissions are now being accepted for an upcoming book called "V!VA List World: 333 Most Loved Travel Experiences" due to be published in April 2008. Viva Travel Guides are looking for 500-700 word articles and / or photographs about the most amazing travel experiences. Been to a place or had an experience so exhilarating that- if given the opportunity again- you'd conceivably plan your entire trip around it? Know of an exotic nook on the planet that we don't, or traveled a known hotspot like the Taj Mahal in a way no one else has? Can you tell your story in such a way that it takes other travelers there without ever leaving their chairs? If so, your piece may be V!VA List worthy! Please note that payment is in the form of a proportion of royalties after the event, but this is a great opportunity for talented upcoming writers to get their stories published. To find out more information, or to pitch a story idea, please contact: paula@vivatravelguides.com

This is a male 18-29 hip and authentic E-zine. We are trying something incredibly new, and exciting, and we’d like our writers to reflect that in their reviews and articles. We aren’t trying to sell sex, but the other sides of being a young male. We have articles and reviews that we are opening up to fresh and innovative writers that can connect with our demographic.

Due to the high volume of interest from a variety of talented writers we are offering you $30 to write a review picked from the topics below. This ensures your spot in our system and shows us your capabilities. Since space is limited please email me if you would like to take this offer, we will send you an official contract to confirm your participation in this project. Within the email you send please also provide your topic of choice from below.

Let’s talk reviews!

Reviews should be at least 300 words and no longer than 800 words. If you have never used the product or service or watched the movie/TV show you shouldn’t be reviewing it. Pictures would be fantastic (Example: Picture of you in Vegas next to your review of your Vegas trip).
• Highlight the independent scene

Movies
• Movies that will make you piss your pants
• B-movies that everyone has to see

TV

List of newspaper contacts/submission info?

Maybe this question has been asked by every new travel writer, but is there a source (preferably online) that lists travel writing contacts and submission requirements for U.S. newspapers?

I've read of two:

"Editor and Publisher Yearbook" at

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/yearbook/index.jsp

This is a searchable database, but access to it costs $695 per year. Seeing as how I only need to do a single, one-time search, this seems pretty steep.

There's also "Travel Publications Update" at

http://main.travelwriters.com/tpu/about/index.asp

Which is only $39 but has 200 newspapers. I don't know if that's U.S. or worldwide.

I don't think the online version of Writer's Market has this kind of newspaper info.

Anyone tried any of these and what has your experience been?

Thanks,

I am in the process of planning a trip from Montreal, Canada to Bocquete, Panama. Originaly I wanted to to it on motorcycle, but now think I'll do it by car.

This will require crossing thru (USA of course), Mexico/Belize, Guatemala, El Savador or Hondras, Nicarugua, and Costa Rica. And, my Spanish is extremely limited ...

Has anyone driven much of ANY of these countries ... and what advise can you give me regarding border crossings, highway police, stoppinf roadside to rest, etc..

Peace,

:D

PS: Any publications that would be interested in this story ..?

Hi - I just realized I've got members! Sorry for the delay.
We're the only tribe for travel writers in here, so all topics are open.
I'm an American living in Brussels. Just moved here two months ago, and starting to get back into freelancing after a couple of years translating. I used to write a monthly column on Paris for a magazine in the US, and have done other things on food, museums, and artists.
With the three of us in 3 different countries, maybe we could pass on possible projects?
I'll try to post anything interesting I find that relates to Canada or the US. I'd love it if you could keep me in mind for anything regarding Europe.

Hi all

Since I am totally new to the travel writing, I would appreciate any input you can give me.

I am not sure whether you finance your travels yourself, write on the trip, and then try selling your stories when you come back - or do you sell your ideas before you travel?

http://www.backpacknation.org/phase3.shtml

the top 4 stories of the 12 that get the most votes will get $1000 prize (resumably to continue their work in the places the writers have written about).

I would love of course more votes for my piece -- but read em all and see whose story makes you laugh, cry, think and most importantly keep on traveling with an open heart and mind.

Cheers...
Travel Writing Workshop in Berkeley (4/23)

A woman named Lisa Alpine is giving a workshop this Saturday (4/23) in Berkeley for $95:

http://www.lisaalpine.com/Classes/writingclasses.html

Does anyone know anything about her? Would you recommend a class with her? Is this a reasonable rate for a 6-hour class? I have no idea about these things...

thanks

advances queries

Hi, got a question for anybody, but specifically for Michelle...
I just got news a publisher called Avalon is looking for someone to write a book for expats in european countries.
They're taking proposals - detailed proposals. Like, really detailed.
Is it cool to ask how much the advance is before sending a proposal?
Michelle, any idea how much the going advance rate is for a 350-400 page book? {I'm guessing they pay a lot less than Fodor's...)

(Or what would you like to be working on, or plan to be working on, or chide yourself for not working on yet, etc.?)

I'm slowly putting together a piece for an airline magazine ... and I'm trying to find a good gay travel magazine for an article on Brussels or Bruges ...

Ever put any of your stuff on their site?
Ever sold anything there?
Do editors actually GO there?
I've had a few articles on them for about 2 years with no response from anyone - I'm hesitant to spend the time putting any more up.
